Okay, it's hot. You know it, we know it, and the guy sweating through his shirt on the trolley definitely knows it. Here's the thing nobody warns you about a hot week: hands get slippery. Sweat, sunscreen, an iced coffee dripping down the cup, and a phone held in one hand while you scroll with your thumb. Gravity doesn't take a day off for the heat.
The slow-motion slip
Most screen cracks this time of year aren't dramatic. The phone just leaves your hand. Walking through Little Italy or East Village with a drink in one hand and a phone in the other is basically asking the sidewalk to catch it, and the sidewalk is never gentle.
Little fixes that help
Wipe your hands before you grab your phone. Sunscreen is the sneaky one: it leaves a film on your fingers, and then on the phone. A case with some grip makes a bigger difference than people expect, and a cheap grip loop or ring is better than nothing. A screen protector costs a lot less than a screen. And if you're walking, give the phone two hands or put it away.
If it already hit the ground
Take a breath and look at it. A small crack at the corner still tends to grow, especially in a hot pocket or a bag that gets squeezed. If bits of glass are flaking, put a piece of clear tape over the crack so you don't cut your fingers. If the phone still works, back it up now.
Don't wait on a cracked screen
It's tempting to live with it. But cracks spread, touch can start acting up, and dust and moisture find their way in. The sooner it's fixed, the simpler the job usually is.
